人生で色んなことが仏道への契機となります。生老病死の四苦もそうですし、人との出会い、別離なども契機となります。その中で一番人を仏道に導くのは親しい人の死です。葬儀を行うのは生物の中で人間だけです。古代のネアンデルタール人の遺跡にも葬儀の跡があるそうです。親しい人を失った喪失感や恐怖感からかもしれません。浄土真宗は親しい人や肉親がその自らの死をもって示してくださった、将来私に必ず起こる厳しい事実をしっかり受け止め、貴重な残された日々を如何に生きるかを教える宗教です。そのためにも一周忌、三回忌と年忌を追って法事をつとめ、真実のみ教えに遇ってゆくことが大事です。

In our daily lives there are many experiences that lead us to the Buddhist Teachings. In Buddhism the Four Sufferings-- birth, old age, illness, death--are such experiences. But the biggest reason one turns to religion is the death of a loved one. Man has tried to cope with these feelings of deep loss and fear by performing funeral rites, with evidence of such rituals dating back to Neanderthal Man. In Jodo Shinshu the death of a loved one is a lesson to us the living that we will meet the same fate one day. Shin Buddhism teaches us how to cope with this reality. Memorial Services are held in the following years to remember the deceased and remind us of the Truth.
